The Extremist Trap
The Missouri Freedom Caucus is shrinking fast, exposing the fatal flaw at the heart of every authoritarian movement

Extremism punishes independent thought
The Missouri Freedom Caucus is a faction of far-right politicians. They push laws rooted in a rigid, moralistic ideology, promoting a puritanical vision of society where conformity is demanded and dissent is punished. Backed by the national Freedom Caucus Network, their goal is not merely to shape Missouri but to advance a coordinated strategy of state-by-state domination. Our nation is under attack.
Although it may be early in the game, there are signs of hope. Here in Missouri, the quest for domination may be starting to crumble.
Just last year, the Missouri Freedom Caucus claimed six state senators as members and seemed to be on a rapid growth path. Surprisingly, only two remain now. What happened? Such movements inevitably fall apart under their own weight. More specifically, extremist movements thrive on a mix of strict conformity and emotional outrage, but when the purity tests get too strict and the outrage escalates beyond sustainable levels, even loyal allies fail to meet the standards and are cast aside.
Former caucus chair Senator Rick Brattin learned this the hard way. His crime? Independent thinking. Brattin supported funding for Kansas City’s stadiums. Whether or not you agree with the decision, Brattin believed it would benefit his constituents. This is perfectly normal behavior in a democracy. The problem is that it clashed with the caucus’s rigid dogma.
The reality is that in a free democratic society, disagreements are inevitable. Negotiation and compromise are the lifeblood of democracy. But under extremism—the seedbed of authoritarianism—such principles are branded as betrayal.
Brattin’s ordeal illustrates the fatal flaw of every extremist movement. Leaders of extremist movements demand absolute obedience, suppressing individuality, giving rise to rebellion. History proves this truth: from teenagers rebelling against overbearing parents to nations rising against tyrants, the spirit of individual freedom refuses to be extinguished. Democracies recognize this truth; extremism foolishly denies it.
The two remaining caucus members, led by Senator Nick Schroer, still insist their coalition is “stronger than ever.” That’s not strength—it’s foolish denial.
The disintegration of Missouri’s Freedom Caucus is more than just a state senate drama. It's both a warning and a promise. When extremism and intolerance threaten our way of life, freedom fights back. Every protest, every call to a legislator, every act of defiance and resistance tells the same story. In the end, Missourians and Americans in general will not bow to extremism. We will break toward freedom. Every time.
