The Missouri Hammer

To witness voter suppression in action, look to the "Red" states.

Today in Missouri, the state Senate ended debate and forced a vote that supports the Trump Administration’s goal of retaining control of Congress for the next few years. Even though Missouri’s Republican/Democrat split was roughly 60/40 in the last election, Republicans control six of the eight Missouri seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. This latest action by the state legislature will redraw district maps mid-decade to give Republicans seven of the eight seats. Democrats are left with a 12.5% representation in a state where more than 40% of the population identifies as Democratic.

On balance, a few Republicans joined Democrats in campaigning against this lopsided takeover, but to no avail. There simply weren’t enough of them with the courage to stand up against an autocratic regime.

While it’s tempting to write a lengthy article about this issue, the cartoon above says it all: The Missouri Hammer, wielded by the GOP, has crashed down on the citizens of Missouri. Despite widespread protests, including over 5,000 people cramming into the Capitol Building on September 10 to voice their dissent, the GOP prevailed. They even persisted through a filibuster by invoking the so-called “previous question” to shut down debate, nuclear-style.

Judging by the rising number of protesters showing up in the streets week after week, our fight for freedom is far from over!
